English and Communication Curriculum

The English and Communication curriculum in Phase 1 (Y7-8) and Phase 2 (Y9-11) is delivered according to the 3 Pathways:

  • Pathway 1 follow an informal curriculum where English and Communication is delivered around a termly theme and is embedded into daily activities.
  • Pathway 2 follow a semi-formal curriculum. Both Phase 1 and 2 have one ‘Communication and Interaction’ session per week and three English sessions which are also linked to various Humanities topics.
  • Pathway 3 follow a formal curriculum. Both Phase 1 and 2 have one ‘Current affairs’ session per week where students discuss weekly news. English sessions in Pathway 3 are delivered separately from Humanities. Students in Phase 1 have three English session per week and students in Phase 2 have four English sessions.

Both Pathway 2 and 3 students have daily 15 minutes ‘Reading’ sessions. Each class have a designated ‘Reading corner’ area where students can explore and engage with books thought the day.

Teachers follow the English ‘Progression of skills’ for each of the three areas:

    • Reading
    • Writing
    • Speaking and Listening.

active listening, clear spoken language and non-verbal communication.

To create report/podcast/video/leaflet.

To listen, respond and evaluate content, viewpoints, evidence and aspects of presentation.

Animals

 

To create a fact file and/or encyclopaedia.

To speak confidently and effectively when presenting information.

Journeys/Travel

(Travel – Going Global, Holidays, Immigration)

To create a journal/travel guide/itinerary/podcast.

To select and organise information and ideas effectively for informal spoken presentations.

Year 9,10,11

Year 3

Musicals

To create Song, Lyrics and/or script.

To improvise, rehears and perform play scripts and poetry.

Prehistoric / Dinosaurs

To create essay/timeline/fact file.

To give a short presentation and ask questions to clarify information.

Mysteries and Crimes

To create a poster/map, notes and report.

To select and organise information and ideas effectively for formal spoken presentations/report.
