WORK RELATED LEARNING STRATEGY

FOR TALBOT SPECIALIST SCHOOL

To create opportunities which allows for students to access / experience work related learning and work-type opportunities.

Talbot School will deliver Work Related Learning and will aim to provide students with meaningful work-related opportunities as appropriate and relative to their learning ability.

Work Related Learning will:-

Enable students to experience and gain a better understanding of the World of Work through activities, programmes and/or placements.

Incorporate Business and Enterprise learning and Work Experience.

Where possible work in conjunction with employers, work-based learning providers and others either directly or via Education Business Partnership Organisations.

Be delivered safely. Risk assessments and safeguarding responsibilities will be adhered to ensuring students safety whilst accessing work-related learning activities, whether these are on or off site.

Be accredited where possible via the Asdan PSD units (Preparation For Work, Managing Own Money, Personal safety in the Community) and/or through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Delivery of Work Experience

‘Schools and colleges will be expected to offer their students high quality and meaningful work experience as part of their 16-19 study programme to give the student a valuable experience of the work environment and develop their employability skills.‘ DfE 2015

The DfE defines meaningful work experience as ‘purposeful, substantial and meaningful.’ Work experience must be relevant to the young person’s study programme and/or career aspirations and should be well managed, with up front clarity about the roles, responsibilities and the expectations for both the student and employer.

Work Experience will be included within the offer and is an integral part of the Work Related Learning curriculum. This will be delivered to students from Y11 upwards. Delivery will take into account the students’ needs and their particular learning pathway. Care will be taken to provide appropriate learning opportunities which are relevant, achievable and aspirational.

It will aim to:

  • Help students to identify the skills and qualities needed for the work place
  • Help students to identify their own relevant  skills and qualities
  • Give an understanding of the different work settings  and roles which may be available to them
  • Prepare students for work placements via real experiences

Give opportunities to access appropriate work placements
